Oregon State University, Gladys Valley Marine Studies Building

GRI is the engineer of record for the Oregon State University (OSU) Marine Studies Initiative (MSI) building project Newport, Oregon. GRI conducted a subsurface exploration program and assisted the design team through efforts to address the tsunami and ground shaking seismic hazards at the site. The design involved development of a site-specific basis of design implementing performance-based earthquake engineering to evaluate both code-based probabilistic seismic hazards and deterministic tsunami scenarios. The project also included independent geotechnical, tsunami, structural, and seismic hazard peer reviews from four different consulting firms. The project’s innovative design involves supporting the shallow foundations and floor slab of the new structure with deep soil mixing ground improvement  to mitigate liquefaction and liquefaction-induced settlement.
