Clackamas Community College, Transportation Improvements
Imagine Clackamas, an organization of over 100 community members and students established a shared vision and strategic action plan for Clackamas Community College’s (CCC) desired future. In conjunction with an extensive student and community engagement program, some of the proposed improvements sent to the CCC board to assist them with prioritizing and leveraging limited resources included:
- Modernizing Facilities
- Improving Safety Features (Lighting)
- Improving Public Transportation
- Providing Additional Parking
As part of a voter approved $90 million bond measure and a ConnectOregon grant, several CCC transportation improvement projects were recently completed at the CCC Oregon City campus, including: a new transit center; expanded parking facilities and reconstruction of the primary circulation road (Douglas Loop Road).
GRI and KPFF worked together to design an integrated parking and transit facility with the objective of providing safety, functionality and sustainability, while meeting the expected future transportation needs of CCC for the next 25 years. The parking lot doubles the number of parking stalls, provides ADA access and a location for personal vehicle drop-off. The transit center consists of a raised concrete plaza lined with safety bollards that can accommodate up to 12 buses at a time. Pedestrian paths and updated lighting were designed to safely move students and staff from the parking lots to and from the college. Stormwater treatment was provided with vegetated islands and water quality swales and landscaping was designed to not only be low maintenance, but to provide safe visual sight lines across the facilities.
The entrance road and transit center were designed to accommodate the heavy transit bus loading while the design alternatives for the parking lot(s) and loop road were cost effective, practical from a constructability standpoint, and designed to allow for low-cost maintenance during future rehabilitation cycles. Sustainability was a strong consideration in the designs and, to this end, both the parking lot(s) and loop road were constructed using full-depth reclamation recycled pavement material coupled with on-site stormwater treatment.
