Lower Columbia Estuary Partnership, Lower East Fork Lewis River Floodplain Restoration

The Lower Columbia Estuary Partnership completed a project to improve juvenile salmon habitat on the East Fork of the Lewis River south of La Center, Washington, by breaching the existing levee on the north side of the river at two locations, replacing an existing culvert, and upgrading an existing weir. Four pedestrian bridges were constructed to maintain pedestrian access to the area. GRI characterized subsurface soil and groundwater conditions at the site by advancing a series of hand-auger explorations and provided geotechnical recommendations for site preparation and grading, excavation and groundwater control, structural fill, and culvert foundation design. GRI also provided geotechnical criteria for design of the pedestrian bridges and provided construction support services.
