GRI has provided geotechnical engineering services to the University of Oregon since 1986. The projects have ranged from new isolated buildings to construction of buildings adjacent to existing settlement-sensitive structures and include the Science Facility Additions and Alterations, the William W. Knight Law Center, Moshofsky Sports Center, Recreation and Fitness Center, Tennis Center, Lillis Business Complex, Beall Hall expansion, the new MRI facility, the Nanoscience building, Counseling Center, Learning Center, and the recent Autzen Stadium expansion project. GRI is currently providing geotechnical engineering services on the U of O campus for the College of Education building, the Academic Learning Center, and Alumni Center, proposed Baseball Stadium, and additions to Miller Theater and Museum of Natural History. The services have included geotechnical investigations, consultation and review of construction documents during final design, and field observation services during earthwork and foundation construction. The geotechnical investigations have included detailed evaluation of subsurface materials and conditions, laboratory testing, engineering analyses, and development of recommendations for earthwork and site preparation; foundation designs, including conventional spread footings, drilled piers, and pin piles; embedded wall design; utility construction; shoring design; and site-specific seismic hazard studies. Geotechnical considerations have included the presence of fine-grained, moisture-sensitive soils; shallow bedrock; areas of uncontrolled fill; and high groundwater levels.
