South Waterfront Park, located on the west bank of the Willamette River, begins at about the Marquam Bridge and runs northward to about SW Montgomery Street. The park improvements included lookouts that extend over the top of the riverbank, beacons in the river, a concrete esplanade along the top of the riverbank, and a restroom. Grading in the upland area included up to 8 ft of excavation in areas and placement of up to 10 ft of fill to create a knoll. Additional work included grading, shaping, and protecting the riverbank. GRI completed multiple phases of work for this site, including numerous environmental projects. GRI evaluated subsurface materials and conditions at the site, completed laboratory testing, and developed recommendations for site preparation and grading, structural fill placement, slope protection, fill embankment settlement monitoring, pavement design, recycling of on-site concrete debris, design criteria for retaining walls, spread footing and pile foundations, and seismic design considerations. Collaboration with the design team lead to innovative solutions for treatment of the riverbank that resulted in a softened, more natural appearance while maintaining protection of the slope.
