The Park Avenue West Tower is located at SW Park Avenue and Yamhill streets in downtown Portland. The structure has 34 above-grade levels, a six-story underground parking garage and will include office and retail space on the bottom units with luxury condominiums on top. A vehicle and pedestrian tunnel extend from the below-grade portion of the structure to the underground parking structure on Park Block 5 to the south. GRI evaluated subsurface materials and conditions at the site and developed recommendations for floor and foundation support, shoring and embedded wall design, tunnel design, subdrainage, and seismic design considerations. An excavation extending 80 ft below adjacent streets was necessary to construct the building. A shoring system consisting of soldier-pile-and-lagging walls with lateral support provided by tie-back anchors was required to protect the excavation and adjacent streets and utilities. GRI personnel provided construction observation services and consultation during earthwork, shoring installation, and foundation construction.
