Toyota Facility at Terminal 4

Toyota Facility at Terminal 4
Portland, Oregon

The Port of Portland improved and expanded the Toyota auto receiving area of Terminal 4 on the Willamette River.  The improvements consisted of flattening the slope of a portion of the riverbank, installing a new stormwater management system, construction of new and reconditioned access roads and vehicle storage areas and modified rail access, and installation of 100-ft-tall light poles.  As part of the site improvements, two existing buildings were removed and new structures were built elsewhere on the site.  Significant portions of the site are newly paved and/or improved with an overlay.  GRI evaluated subsurface materials and conditions for the site infrastructure and developed recommendations for earthwork and site preparation, including placement of structural fill; design and construction of flexible pavements and asphaltic-concrete overlays; design and construction of underground utilities, including excavation, shoring, control of groundwater, and methods to limit post-construction settlement; riverbank modification, including slope configuration, erosion protection; seismic design considerations; and design of foundations for the new light pole bases.  GRI also provided technical support for environmental planning and permitting issues associated with the project.
