PSU Science Building No. 2

PSU Science Building No. 2
Portland, Oregon

The existing Science Building 2 at Portland State University was constructed in 1970 and has four above-grade levels and three below-grade levels.  In addition to classrooms, offices, and laboratory spaces, the building includes laboratory space on the first two floors for Department of Environmental Quality and Public Health labs.  The structure is being modified to include seismic upgrades and the addition of a new 5,700 sq ft hazardous waste facility.  GRI assisted the design team with the geotechnical and seismic aspects of the project. Our services included the evaulation of subsurface conditions at the site; a site-specific seismic hazard study; and development of recommendations for earthwork, excavation and groundwater management, foundation and floor support, and embedded wall design.  GRI personnel are providing on-site observation services during earthwork and foundation construction.  The scheduled completion date is spring 2011.
